The Dodgers have Blake Treinen back in their bullpen for the first time in over three months. The veteran right-hander was activated off the 60-day injured list on Sunday morning ahead of the Dodgers’ series finale against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Treinen has been on the injured list since April 19 with right forearm tightness, and missed 84 games.
He struck out 10 in eight innings in his eight appearances with the Dodgers this season, including two saves. He figures to get more save opportunities,
especially with Tanner Scott placed on the injured list on Tuesday.
“I think given where we’re at, I don’t know that he’ll be dedicated to the closer role because there might be some time where I feel we need the highest-leverage guy for a particular spot and I’ll use him there,” manager Dave Roberts told reporters at Fenway Park on Saturday of Treinen, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.
Treinen last pitched on Thursday for Oklahoma City, on the second of back-to-back nights which was the final step of his rehab assignment.
In seven rehab appearances between Oklahoma City and the Arizona Complex League, Treinen allowed two runs (one earned) in seven innings, with 10 strikeouts and one walk. In his last four appearances, all in Triple-A, Treinen retired all 12 batters faced, with six strikeouts.
Because Treinen was on the 60-day injured list, his activation adds him back to the 40-man roster. But the Dodgers already had two open spots after Nick Nastrini was sent outright to the minors on July 18 and Lou Trivino was designated for assignment on Monday.
To make room for Treinen on the active roster, the Dodgers optioned Will Klein, who was one of four relief pitchers used in Saturday night’s loss at Fenway Park. Klein has a 3.72 ERA in his nine games with Los Angeles, with 14 strikeouts in his 9⅔ innings but also eight walks.
This is the fourth time Klein has been optioned since the season began.
