Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan for the 2025–26 season, with an option to make the move permanent next summer. The 27-year-old England international has been cleared to undergo a medical and complete the transfer this week while NUFC complete their preseason Asian tour far from Tyneside.

time at Arsenal recently.

The Saints were relegated from the Premier League in May, and Ramsdale’s contract with them runs until 2028. It’s a logical move for the keeper to find a better, suited-to-his level team, such as Newcastle.

The Magpies’ goalkeeping overhaul comes after they failed to secure top target James Trafford, who rejoined Manchester City despite agreeing terms with the Magpies. City matched Newcastle’s £27 million offer, triggering a contractual clause with Burnley allowing the goalie to rejoin his former club.

Ramsdale made 32 appearances for Southampton last season and has previously played for Arsenal and Sheffield United. He was Arsenal’s No.1 in 2022–23 but lost his starting role to David Raya the following year.

Newcastle currently have Nick Pope as their first-choice keeper, along with Martin Dubravka, Odysseas Vlachodimos, John Ruddy, and Mark Gillespie.

Ramsdale is expected to provide immediate competition for Pope, particularly knowing how shaky Pope’s health has been of late and the ample time he’s missed in recent years, leaving Newcastle’s goal in a precarious situation at crucial stages.
