Rockies 8, Cardinals 4: Riding the Crazy Train to victory

WHAT'S THE STORY?

The runs came early and often for the Colorado Rockies, who held on to their early advantage for the entire game as they took home the win over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

I Don’t Wanna Stop

Mickey Moniak has been on the tear of his career lately. Since July 1st, he’s hitting over .430 and slugging north of .750. As he took to the plate in the bottom of the first inning on Tuesday riding a six-game hitting streak, how would he follow it up?

Why, with a home run, of course.

Moniak’s 450-foot blast, his 15th of the season, represented a new career-high for the former first-round draft pick and gave his team an early 1-0 lead. It appears that Mickey’s only getting hotter, and that he’s not stopping any time soon.

Speaking of not stopping, Moniak wasn’t the only one feeling good early. In the bottom of the second, a Ryan McMahon walk and Brenton Doyle single put two runners on base with two outs for Adael Amador, who promptly doubled them both home to give Colorado a three-run advantage. Not a bad way to start a game.

The Wizard

Brenton Doyle’s 2025 season has largely been a rough one, but July has seen his fortunes turn. In addition to seeing his bat come alive (a .310 batting average this month), Doyle is also back to making plays that boggle the mind, with the fans on Tuesday night bearing witness to one of his absolute best.

With one out and one on in the top of the third, Brendan Donovan lifted a Bradley Blalock fastball way out into center field. What seemed like a sure run-scoring double was instead caught by a diving Doyle, who fired back to first base to record the inning-ending double play.

In a career quickly becoming littered with defensive highlights, this play may be one of Doyle’s absolute best.

See You on the Other Side

That’s what Ryan McMahon said to the baseball he clobbered in the bottom of the third frame. Mac, facing a 3-0 count, clobbered Erick Fedde’s sinker for his 16th home run of the season, a three-run shot that doubled the Rockies lead.

With a strong 6-0 lead, it would be on Colorado’s pitching staff to hold the advantage as the game entered the middle innings.

Changes

Bradley Blalock performed admirably throughout his outing against the Cards. Working his way out of some jams, Blalock allowed two runs but managed to stop St. Louis there as he worked into the sixth inning.

In that frame, Blalock allowed singles to Alec Burleson and Willson Contreras, putting runners on the corners with no outs. After coaxing a shallow flyout of Nolan Arenado, Jake Bird entered in relief and sent down Masyn Wynn and Jordan Walker to end the visiting team’s threat.

Blalock would doubtless have preferred to get out of that final frame, but his final line was none too shabby: 5 13 innings, eight hits, one walk, and no strikeouts, all amounting to two runs allowed.

Mama, I’m Coming Home

The game’s last few innings saw the Cardinals begin to mount a comeback. After taking runs from Zach Agnos and Victor Vodnik in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, it seemed that there may be scary times ahead.

Luckily, the Rockies shut it down. Moniak worked a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth to put their lead at 8-4, an advantage they’d take into the ninth inning. It was then that Seth Halvorsen shut the Redbirds down with little drama, finishing off a nice team victory for Colorado.

Coming Up Next

The Rox and Cards play once more tomorrow afternoon to finish off their series. That game will see St. Louis’ Andre Pallante take on... well, someone. The Rockies haven’t officially announced their starter, though Tanner Gordon seems likely.

That game starts at 1:10pm MDT. See you then!
