Arsenal have announced the signing of Noni Madueke today, with the 23-year-old winger joining them from Chelsea in a £52m transfer.
This move had been in the works for a while and the last few days were spent just finalizing the minor details like the medical and the announcement video. Ironically, Noni left the team less than 48 hours prior to our most amusing and delightful (and dominant) win in the Club World Cup final, 3-0 against PSG. (He had played in most of our games at the tournament before
then, so I’m sure he’ll get his medal still.)
But overall, that was emblematic of Noni’s gradually decreasing involvement and impact, and whether that was a result of, or (part of the) reason for the transfer, it was telling in retrospect. He started two of our three group games but did not start any of our knockout round matches.
Talent in abundance.

That said, Madueke does leave with 20 Chelsea goals to his name in less than 100 appearances (92, to be exact), since joining us two and a half years ago from PSV. That’s not a bad return overall, inconsistent or not.
There’s a chance that Noni kicks on at Arsenal and finds a new level, which would be less than ideal for us in terms of this transfer, though the incoming fee will help in a more immediate fashion as we attempt to stay onside of not just Premier League but Champions League financial regulations as well.
Perhaps we’ll cross paths in the latter, too.
Thanks for the fun times, Noni, and good luck.
