Report: Micah Parsons considering severing self from team as Cowboys relationship deteriorates

WHAT'S THE STORY?

The Dallas Cowboys are in some serious trouble. Micah Parsons is not playing around.

Friday morning brought a report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini that Parsons’ relationship with the team has “deteriorated” and that Parsons is considering “drastic” measures which could include a trade request or a public declaration that he has had enough, as if this isn’t one of those.

This, if it is not obvious, is not good! Parsons is the best player on the Cowboys and we are just about two weeks into training camp and his “hold in”, even if he isn’t using that language. Parsons played all of last year while eligible for a contract extension so the team has had more than enough time to take care of this and he seems pretty fed up with the fact that they have not.

To be honest this whole thing is and was very predictable. The Cowboys have a history of dragging out extensions with their top-level players and are doing it again with Parsons. Reports have suggested over the last few weeks that what complicated this one in particular was the negotiations that the team’s leadership had with Parsons directly before his agent became involved. Russini noted this in her story:

Among the key issues: Parsons negotiated directly with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones over multiple days in the spring, and the team believed it had a deal, multiple league sources said. When Parsons’ agent pushed back and attempted to negotiate further, the Cowboys declined to engage with him and told the pass rusher to honor the agreement he had made.

Now, the team is refusing to engage with Parsons’ agent at all, creating a tense standoff amid increasing friction.

This whole report lines up with what Adam Schefter discussed earlier in the week where he noted that Micah may have had good intentions with his “negotiations” with the team that ultimately may have been a detriment.

Ultimately this is a product of waiting too long, well beyond the last two weeks as noted. Parsons was a first-round pick in 2021 and there are already first-rounders from 2022 across the NFL that have extensions with their teams. We have been over the logic behind all of this many times.

For what it’s worth, the internet was running a bit wild around this whole idea late Thursday night as Parsons and Trevon Diggs were posting some ominous-type things on X. They were somewhat indicating that 2025 could be their last season together, although with Diggs’ future somewhat in doubt it was partly assumed that the posts could have been about him.

If we want to read even more into social media, Juanyeh Thomas changed his profile picture on the platform to one of Parsons on Friday morning, seemingly as a show of support.

This never had to be this way. It defies all logic.

Yet here we are.
