Yankees 5 Jays 4
Well, we didn’t expect to win them all....
Jeff Hoffman, pitching in his fourth game in five days, gave up a home run to Ben Rice in the ninth, which was the game-winning run. Hoffman’s been a throwback to the old days when a closer would go day after day.
Max Scherzer had a rough first inning. He gave up a leadoff single, a double, then got Aaron Judge to strike out. But then Jazz Chisholm homered, and we were down 3-0 before getting to bat. Max would go 5 innings, allowing 4 earned
(giving up a homer to Cody Bellinger in the fifth) on 5 hits and a walk.
Mason Fluharty threw a perfect sixth and seventh. Justin Bruihl gave up a walk, but got two strikeouts in the eighth.
We chipped at the early lead, getting:
- One in the first: George Springer took a one-out walk, Vlad followed with a single. After Bo struck out, Addison Barger singled home Springer.
- One in the fifth: George and Vlad started the inning with singles. Bo hit into a double play (very nicely turned) and Barger again singled in another run.
- Two in the sixth: Myles Straw hit a bounce right at shortstop Anthony Volpe, but went hard down the line, and Volpe’s throw short-hopped Rice at first for an error. An out later, Davis Schneider doubled Straw home. An out later, Springer singled home Davis.
We had other chances. Bo led off the seventh with a double but we didn’t score him. Vlad singled to lead off the ninth but....you know. We loaded the bases in the second, and didn’t score.
We had 11 hits, so we should have scored more. Vlad had 3. George and Addison had 2.
Nathan Lukes had an 0 for 5. He’s had a rough time lately, just 2 for his last 20 at bats. And Krik also went 0 for 5.

Other Award: Hoffman (-.303, not really fair, but what in life is fair?), Scherzer (-.186), Kirk (-.232), Lukes (-.218), Bichette (-.218, 1 for 5 but he had runners on base a lot) and Clement (-.091, 1 for 4).
Tomorrow we have game three of the series. Max Fried (11-3, 2.43) vs. Chris Bassitt (10-4, 3.89).
