The Spurs play their last scheduled game of Summer League tonight against the Charlotte Hornets, following their exciting overtime victory over the Jazz, capped with a Riley Minix turnaround dagger at the overtime buzzer. Dylan Harper also had a clutch
time play, tying it up at the end of regulation with a drive to the hoop as time was running out. You can’t forget the heroics of David Jones-Garcia, who kept the Silver and Black in the game as the lead seesawed back and forth as both teams went on extended runs. Harper is out for the rest of the Las Vegas Summer League, But there are still games to play for San Antonio before they truck on out of the city of lights in the desert.
Tonight they face the Charlotte Hornets, and a win tonight would likely land the Spurs in the semifinals of the Las Vegas Summer League. There very likely will be more than four undefeated teams at the end of tonight’s play, but the second tiebreaker after wins is point differential, and the Spurs will be well-served on that point by blowing out the Sixers by 41 last week in their opening game in Vegas. They should advance tonight with a win unless both the Clippers and Hawks blow out their opponents by huge margins. Summer League isn’t about winning games, but the players would be happy to come home with some extra cash and some nice rings, so expect to see some good efforts tonight from both teams.
But to advance, the Spurs need to win first, and the Hornets will be a difficult opponent. First round pick Kon Knueppel is the Summer Squad leader for the teal-garbed bugs, and if he plays tonight, his matchup with David Jones-Garcia will be about as entertaining of a competition that you’ll see in Summer League, the vaunted rookie vs the unheralded underdog. Who would bet against Jones-Garcia coming out on top?
After tonight, the Spurs will play one more consolation game before they leave Vegas if they don’t win a spot in the semis, and the schedule will be announced after all games have concluded tomorrow night. Even though there are six games left to play on Friday, the semifinals will be set tonight, because all of the teams that play tomorrow have already been eliminated. If the Spurs do get a spot in the semis, the will play a semifinal game on Saturday, and will play in the Summer League Finals on Sunday if they win their semifinal.
Game Prediction:
Brian Wright has a talk with David Jones-Garcia at halftime. Nothing is revealed about whta was said, but DJG sits out the second half.
