MJF wins CMLL championship and sets up first defense

WHAT'S THE STORY?

@CMLL_OFICIAL

MJF is your American hero. He may not be the one you want, but he is the one you need.

MJF sauntered into hostile territory to challenge Averno for the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship on Friday night (Aug. 1, 2025) at Arena Mexico.

This bout is part of the larger feud between MJF and Mistico. Maxwell desires that championship as a way to stick it to El Rey de Plata y Oro by winning it first.

MJF accomplished his goal, albeit by slimy tactics. He grabbed the referee to shield a mule kick to the groin. MJF promptly attacked Averno’s injured knee for a half crab submission to win gold.

 CMLL

The drama did not end there. MJF was confronted by Zandokan Jr. The luchador had two messages. First, respect lucha libre and the fans. Second, that championship belongs to the people who work in CMLL day after day. Zandokan Jr. will not rest until the title returns home to Mexico.

Backstage, MJF fired up trash talk for Mistico. The American Hero once again proved himself to be the better man. MJF didn’t shy way from Zandokan Jr. If the pirate wants a shot, just ask. MJF will make him walk the plank on August 15.

He’s not forgetting about his current AEW rival, or his Casino Gauntlet contract either...
