Jays 4 Orioles 16
That went about as badly as possible.
Easton Lucas gave up four earned in 2.2 innings.
Lazaro Estrada had a couple of good innings, but his third inning was awful, giving up six runs in 3.1. He hit two batters in a row and then gave up a pair of home runs.
Chad Green was very Chad Greenish. He gave up a couple of ground ball singles, one in and out of the glove of Addison Barger at third, the other a soft one, that went through the hole between second and short. Then a couple of home
runs, and Green added another four earned in an inning.
Ali Sanchez traded battery spots, moving from behind the plate to in front. He gave up two earned runs in an inning.
On offense...well it really didn’t matter, but Barger hit a two run homer and Joey Loperfido had a solo homer.
We had 11 hits. Loperfido had 3. Wagner and Schneider had two. Lukes (who didn’t look great with the glove either (0 for 5) and Clement (0 for 4) had the 0 fors.
Something that doesn’t happen very often, but our defense was crappy. We failed to get an out in the rundown in the first inning. Loperfido had a ball come out of his glove on a diving catch attempt. Barger had a ground ball come out of his glove at third and missed making a catch at the wall in right. Lukes gave up on a ball that hit the bottom of the fence. I thought he should have had it easy.
Loperfido jammed his hand, or thumb or finger sliding into the catcher’s foot in a double steal attempt (I hope he’s ok).
Jay of the Day: Wagner had the number (.119 WPA).
Other award: Lucas (-.288), Eastrada (-.144, sort of not fair because he was left out there to take it), Lukes (-.220), and Sanchez (-.115).
Game two is a 6:30 Eastern start. We have Erik Lauer (6-2, 2.61) starting against Brandon Young (0-5, 7.34).
Let’s hope for some runs and some good pitching.
