Before hitting the practice fields at St. John Fisher University on Sunday morning, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott spent several minutes running through a lengthy list of injured players. It’s a list that includes two who are listed as week-to-week: cornerback Maxwell Hairston, who’s now joined by wide receiver Khalil Shakir.

Hairston remains sidelined with an LCL sprain, while Shakir is now dealing with a high ankle sprain. McDermott stated that Shakir has dealt with a similar injury before,

but that with this one “it’s going to take some time” before Josh Allen’s top target from 2024 is back on the field.

On defense, the injuries continue plaguing the safety room, where both Cole Bishop and Taylor Rapp were held out of the latest training camp session. Injuries also continue to sap the strength out of the linebackers — with both Dorian Williams (out) and Terrel Bernard (limited) banged up.

In total, there were 12 players who did not practice on Sunday morning, with the following 11 listed by both McDermott and later Matt Parrino:

  • CB Maxwell Hairston
  • WR Khalil Shakir
  • WR Curtis Samuel
  • WR Kaden Prather
  • OL Alec Anderson
  • C Sedrick Van Pran Granger
  • S Cole Bishop
  • S Taylor Rapp (knee)
  • LB Dorian Williams
  • LB Shaq Thompson (hamstring)
  • K Tyler Bass (pelvic area)

While four players were listed as limited:

  • LB Terrell Bernard
  • RT Spencer Brown
  • WR Josh Palmer (groin)
  • FB Reggie Gilliam

Remember, however, that the total number of players missing Sunday’s practice stood at 12? That’s because of a late addition to the list, featuring one of the Bills’ key starters on offense.

Towards the end of the session, ESPN reporter Alaina Getzenberg noted that starting running back James Cook wasn’t in uniform, instead “on the exercise bike with athletic trainer Nate Breske overseeing.”

We’ll have to wait and see what has Cook sidelined currently, and how long he’ll be held out of practice and/or preseason.
