Vidal Bruján has not performed well as a bench player for the Cubs. He replaced Ian Happ during Happ’s at-bat Tuesday when Happ fouled a ball off his shin.
At first, it was thought Happ might have to go to the injured list, but X-rays were negative and Happ will stay on the active roster.
Instead, Moises Ballesteros was recalled from Triple-A Iowa today and Bruján was designated for assignment.
Ballesteros went 3-for-16 with two walks and three RBI in five games for the Cubs in a brief callup in May.
At Iowa, he is batting .332/.393/.496 (112-for-337) with 26 doubles and nine home runs.
Bruján batted .222/.234/.289 (10-for-45) in 36 games for the Cubs with three doubles. I wish him well going forward.
This certainly will not be the last move the Cubs will make over the next few days. As always, we await developments. Today’s game preview will post shortly, at 11 a.m. CT.
