The Mets are reportedly one of a number of teams checking in on the availability of center fielder Luis Robert Jr. Robert, currently in his sixth season in the majors, is hitting .206/.293/.343 with ten home runs, 41 RBI, and 26 stolen bases.
Roberts, a 27 year old Cuban defector, signed with the White Sox in 2017. In his career thus far, he’s won a Gold Glove (2020) and a Silver Slugger (2023), made an All-Star Team (2023), and got down-ballot MVP votes (2023). After a bad 2024 (86 OPS+), Roberts has
continued to struggle in 2025. He has two team options remaining on his contract, for $20 million per year, with $2 million buy-outs.
On Monday, David Stearns identified center field as an area that the Mets would be engaged in during this MLB Trade Deadline, due to not getting as much production from as they had hoped from the position. Stearns expressed some hesitation in pursuing a trade, due to both Jeff McNeil’s perfectly cromulent performance in center this season and Tyrone Taylor’s elite defense.
Robert’s stat line is not all that dissimilar from Taylor’s this season, but he brings more a fair amount more speed and power. In now his second down year in a row, Robert could potentially benefit from a change of scenery and a lineup with more protection in it. Just two seasons removed from a 38 HR/36 2B season, Robert may be worth taking a risk on, depending on the asking price from the Sox.
