Marc-André ter Stegen’s time at FC Barcelona could be nearing its end, with AS Monaco once again showing interest in signing the German goalkeeper. After recently securing Ansu Fati on loan, the French club is reportedly exploring a second deal with the Catalans, this time for a veteran shot-stopper who has lost his place in the squad.

Barcelona’s new manager Hansi Flick has informed Ter Stegen that he will not be the starting goalkeeper next season. Instead, Joan García, recently signed from Espanyol,

and veteran Wojciech Szczęsny will occupy the top two spots. Ter Stegen is now effectively third choice, a surprising fall from grace for the long-time Barça number one.

This decision opens the door for a summer exit, especially given the financial benefits his departure would bring. Ter Stegen is one of the club’s highest earners, and reducing the wage bill remains a priority for a Barcelona side still constrained by La Liga’s financial fair play regulations.

Monaco, in need of stability in goal after a shaky season, had already contacted Ter Stegen’s representatives weeks ago. Although the initial approach was rejected, the 33-year-old’s position may now have changed in light of Flick’s decision. According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Monaco remain interested and could soon return with a new proposal.

Discussions between the two clubs during the Ansu Fati negotiations included the possibility of other transfers, with various options for a Ter Stegen move already floated, including a shared salary arrangement or a loan with a purchase clause.

While other clubs, including Galatasaray, have also expressed interest, Monaco appear especially eager to secure Ter Stegen’s services. The German, who still hopes to be part of his national team’s World Cup plans, may be tempted by the opportunity for more consistent minutes in Ligue 1.

For now, Ter Stegen is holding firm in his desire to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona, but with pre-season already underway and his role clearly diminished, a move could materialize in the coming weeks.
