WHAT'S THE STORY?

After Rutgers' first day of summer practice, 7/28, Head Coach Greg Schiano held a press conference where he gave a little summer preview for the team before answering questions from the media.

The first thing that jumped out occurred when Schiano was talking about the depth of the defensive line, especially on the inside. At the end of last season, there was concern about the interior of Rutgers' defensive line, especially after Kyonte Hamilton left for the pros. However, when Schiano was asked about it

in his press conference, he almost made it sound like the position was loaded with talent and now they needed to decide who is on top. If Rutgers can’t find a few interior guys who can be standouts, it seems like they are going to rely on their depth to make up that production.

When asked about the linebacker position, it seems like Moses Walker has locked up the spot next to Darial Djabome, and that they are just sorting out which guys belong in what spot behind them.

On the offensive side of the ball, while it was believed that CJ Campbell was going to be the clear cut starter for the Knights, it now seems that there is a position battle brewing. Rutgers has several capable running backs on their roster, including Campbell, Antwan Raymond, Samuel Brown V, and Ja’shon Benjamin. Raymond proved his talents last year, taking over for an injured Kyle Monangai. Brown has proven to be a capable Big Ten runner over the years. Benjamin offers the Knights some speed in the backfield. Maybe a committee approach to this position is the best option for the Knights.

There will be more updates on these positions and the others throughout the summer, as Schiano usually hosts a few press conferences throughout training camp.
