Fan support at Evolution clearly meant the world to Charlotte Flair

WHAT'S THE STORY?

When she returned after missing a year to knee surgery, Charlotte Flair won the Royal Rumble and headed out on Raw the next to talk about what she’d overcome in an effort to get back to WWE and claim a top title. It was a mostly babyface promo that she was booed pretty relentlessly for...

She continued getting those kinds of reactions throughout her WrestleMania program with WWE Women’s champion Tiffany Stratton, which culminated in the now-infamous night in Chicago were Stratton brought up Charlotte’s marital “record” after her recent divorce from fellow WWE Superstar Andrade. Cheers for that line, combined with the jeers she was already getting, clearly rattled Flair — something she just opened up about in a much-praised Player’s Tribune post that offered an unflinching look at the woman behind WWE’s “Queen”*, and the experiences that continue to shape her.

Was it the empathy created by Charlotte, or we should say Ashley’s honesty in The Player’s Tribune that led to a completely different reaction during Evolution’s Tag title 4-way last night? Or was it her new on-screen partnership with Alexa Bliss? Both?

Flair just seems grateful for it, regardless of why it happened.

Was that a one-off from a crowd excited to support the women of WWE at their second-ever dedicated show? Will Charlotte continue to be embraced as long as she’s working with Bliss? Or does this finally open the door to the babyface run she’s been wanting for so long?

We’ll know more after another week of WWE shows. Stay tuned (and keep cheering).

* An arrogant, affluent-seeming persona that WWE and Flair continue to use even when trying to get her over as a babyface, which hasn’t helped their cause in that regard.
