AP News: The baseball world held its breath when Eugenio Suárez was hit on the hand by a pitch in the All-Star Game. However, it looks like the coveted third baseman dodged a bullet with X-rays coming back negative. Suárez is one of the most sought-after players as the MLB Trade Deadline approaches and is the name generating the most rumors as the Yankees ponder upgrades. Jeremy profiled Geno as a possible Yankees target last week.
The Athletic | Brendan Kuty ($): The Yankees are thrilled that Dax
Kilby fell to them with the 39th pick in the MLB Draft. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound shortstop hit .495 with five home runs, 42 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in his senior year at Newnan High School and is a player the Yankees have scouted for a while. Scouting Director Damon Oppenheimer gushed about the top draft pick’s batt skills, speed, instincts, and defensive acumen, and you can read a more detailed breakdown from Pinstripe Alley alum Dan Kelly here.
New York Post | Mitch Fink: Aaron Boone’s selection for the first ever tiebreaker swing off in the All-Star Game backfired as Kyle Schwarber’s three home runs led the NL to victory. Despite having the likes of Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh at his disposal, Boone selected Brent Rooker, Randy Arozarena, and Jonathan Aranda to try to win the game. Boone explained that the league asked for them to be pre-selected before the game itself, and he planned or players who would likely still be active in the game. It’s also been rumored that several players had already left the ballpark after being subbed out — not uncommon for an All-Star Game, to be clear, as some All-Stars do try to fly home that night.
SNY | Phillip Martinez: The Yankees have a big task ahead of them in the second half, as it looks like the AL East will be a multi-team dogfight to the very end. The biggest storyline concerns the moves the team will make at the deadline to bolster their divisional push as well as the MVP and Triple Crown watch for Judge. There’s also starting pitcher health to keep an eye on, with Luis Gil set to return and Max Fried’s finger blister hopefully a minor blip.
New York Post | Ryan Giancola: A huge congratulations to Oswaldo Cabrera, who married his fiancée on Tuesday. He still had to wear his walking boot for the occasion as he continues to recover from the broken ankle suffered on May 18th. He may be out for the season, but he has been an uplifting presence in the dugout and now has another reason to celebrate 2025.
