Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles had quite a summer in terms of adding commitments to Tribe26, but today brings word that one prospect is no longer in the fold. Per his own social media post, local running back Amari Thomas has decommitted from FSU and will likely land with the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Thomas is a 5’10”, 185 running back who will play his senior season for Blountstown after attending Marianna his first three years. He is a composite 4-star player and boasts a highly productive

high school career so far, amassing over 3,100 yards and 56 touchdowns in two seasons.

Losing a talented player is never fun, but losing a talented local player is particularly frustrating. FSU was Thomas’ first major offer. Thomas was the lone running back commitment in the class and momentum started to shift after he took an official visit to South Carolina. Florida State was unable to lock him down after his official to Tallahassee, which didn’t bode well for long term success in this recruitment. NIL likely played a role but in my opinion FSU was just out-recruited here, once again.

Thomas has great hands and is a threat out of the backfield in the passing game, and he would have been an excellent fit in Gus Malzahn’s running back-friendly offense. The silver lining is that this happened now, and FSU can work on getting other backs in for official visits during the season. Running backs are one of the deeper positions each season and after pursuing some other highly-ranked targets and striking out, the Seminoles will need to expand their board.
