Monday notes...
- SCORE FOUR: The Cubs are 51-16 when they have scored at least four runs. When they have allowed at least four, as they did yesterday, they are just 14-34.They are 27-26 when their opponent has had a winning record going into the game, as the Brewers do. (Note that the previous sentence is based on record prior to each game, NOT the record of teams now, which usually is used to show record vs. “teams with winning records.” For example, the Dodgers did not have a winning record when they beat the Cubs to start the season in Japan; they were 0-0. When they beat the Cubs in the second game, they were 1-0, so they had a winning record.) (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- THE HOT STREAK CONTINUES: Matt Shaw, nine games since the All-Star break: .444/.464/1963 (12-for-27) with two doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI, two stolen bases and 11 runs scored. He has hit safely in all nine games, a career-best hitting streak.
- INTERLEAGUE NOTE: The Cubs’ 22-14 record against AL teams is a .611 winning percentage, which is the best percentage by any NL teams against the AL so far this year. The Cubs have 12 games remaining vs. AL teams: three each vs. the Orioles, Blue Jays, Angels and Rays.
- PCA! PCA! PCA!: Pete Crow-Armstrong, last 12 games since July 10: .292/.320/.708 (14-for-48) with eight doubles, four home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored.

Matthew Boyd has a 23-inning scoreless streak dating back to his start against Cleveland July 1 at Wrigley Field. In that span he’s allowed 11 hits and two walks (0.565 WHIP) and struck out 23.
In short, he’s been one of the best
pitchers in baseball over that span, if not the best. He’s a strong candidate for NL Pitcher of the Month.
He has not faced the Brewers this year, and current Brewers are a small sample size 6-for-33 (.182) against him with one home run — that by William Contreras. Keep Contreras off the bases and this should be a good game for Boyd.
It’s good that the Cubs have Boyd going tonight, because Jacob Misiorowski has been a sensation. In six starts he has thrown 473 pitches. Of those, 231 — or 48.8 percent — have been 100 miles per hour or more.
That’s just insane. He’s a freak of nature. He has a 35.7 percent strikeout rate — 40 of 112 batters.
And yet... I think the Cubs have a pretty good chance against him. They have hit Paul Skenes, a similar hard-thrower, pretty well. The Mets had a good game plan against him and scored five runs in fewer than four innings off Misiorowski. The Brewers have been careful with his pitch count — he was removed after only 64 pitches in his last start, July 22 vs. the Mariners.
This ought to be a really interesting matchup.
