Having already signed Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez and now in the midst of a push to sign Alexander Isak, aka the Premier League’s top striker last season, away from Newcastle United, Liverpool are in the midst of a major spending spree.
In particular, if they can pull of an Isak transfer in addition to signing Wirtz—and hopefully bring in a signing at centre half to replace the departed Jarell Quansah— it will have been a summer bordering on unbelievable. The sort of summer that
seems more suited to FIFA or Football Manager than real life.
Oh, and they might sign Rodrygo to replace Luis Diaz should his move to Bayern Munich go through. Rodrygo, the 24-year-old Real Madrid and Brazil winger, has all the talent to be counted one of the game’s top players at his position, but in a squad with Vinicius and Kylian Mbappe minutes are tough.
That has led to rumblings this summer that he wants out, with Arsenal and to a lesser extent Bayern the most regularly linked landing spots. Liverpool, though, are ready to wade into the mix, brush aside those challengers, and lock down the fleet-footed Brazilian.
At least that’s how Spain’s AS see it, with the outlet—widely seen as something of a Real Madrid mouthpiece—claiming the Reds have been in contact with player and club, laying the foundations for a big push to sign Rodrygo if Bayern make them an offer for Diaz that meets their valuation.
Interestingly, while Liverpool have now set a valuation of €100M on Diaz—a high fee reflecting both a difficult winger market and a preference not to sell, but also higher than previous reports had Liverpool setting their valuation—it’s also the price that Madrid have put on Rodrygo.
Even if Liverpool were to sign Rodrygo to replace a departing Diaz it might be fair to ask if perhaps the Reds are simply making too many changes to a squad and inviting risk on that front. If Diaz were to depart, though, you really couldn’t ask for a better replacement.
