Buff Bagwell undergoes an above-the-knee leg amputation

WHAT'S THE STORY?

In 2020, former WCW wrestler Marcus “Buff” Bagwell was involved in a car accident. In the years since, attempts to repair damage done to his right leg in the crash have been unsuccessful. Faced with a choice between having three more surgeries over the next year and still only having a 20% chance of saving his leg, or getting an above-the-knee amputation now — Bagwell chose to have the leg removed now and focus on the rest of his life.

Bagwell has thus far covered his amputation in a video posted

on his YouTube channel yesterday (July 17), and another on Maven Huffman’s today.

About the decision, Bagwell said:

“I’m trying to be excited about it, and I think it’s going to be a wonderful thing. So I’m trying to make a bad situation good again, like I’ve done a lot of times in my life. But I really do think this is the right call. And I’m really thinking that I’m going to have a better quality of life.”

This injury is one of several bad situations the 55-year-old Bagwell got himself into while still in throes of addiction. He says he’s three years sober next month, which has obviously helped with his perspective on losing his leg:

“I’d rather be sober right now with this situation than Buff Bagwell on WCW making money and in the funk I was in. I’d much rather have this life”

A Diamond Dallas Page disciple, Bagwell hopes to get back in the ring to inspire others:

“I want to get back in the ring, hit the ropes, have a match. It’ll show that I’ve came out of the darkness with this thing and I’ve turned it around all the way to being back in the ring as Buff Bagwell. You don’t have to give up with something like this. This is something that I am taking by the horns, man. And I’m going to show the world that you can have just as good of a life with or without a leg.”

Please join us in wishing Buff the best on his recovery. Here’s hoping he accomplishes that goal of having a match somewhere down the road, too.
