WHAT'S THE STORY?

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Let’s start the night off by taking a look back over the three biggest stories of Friday, August 1, 2025.

  1. ‘Old’ Nate Diaz ‘not in good graces of UFC’ amid comeback talks, ‘shot himself in the foot’ with embarrassing Jake Paul loss: You can only look old and slow in so many fights before people stop caring. Jorge Masvidal has to accept this lesson also!
  2. ‘Stupid injury’ sidelines Max Holloway until 2026 — ‘Things are not looking up for me’: It’s tough to pick an opponent for Holloway until the division shakes out, but Charles Oliveira would still probably make sense in six months.
  3. Dustin Poirier reveals next career move after UFC 318 retirement: How do we feel about “The Diamond” on the mic?

Insomnia

I’m not entirely sure what specific issue has set Sean Strickland off. He’s been tweeting about the Epstein files and AIPAC a lot recently. Or maybe he’s just mad about the NSAC suspension. Either way, he wouldn’t be the first UFC fighter to receive a visit from a government agent.

Valter Walker vs. Ryan Spann in the Heavyweight meme battle of the century. Who wins, the puffed up 205-pounder or the heel hook guy?

It’s important to stay hydrated.

One of the greatest combinations in MMA history, instantly recognizable.

Dricus Du Plessis and Ilia Topuria debuting on the same card is a great bit of trivia. Tom Aspinall’s second UFC appearance was the same event too!

A gun to match the “Bullet.”

It sucks that Ben Askren is back in the hospital, but at least his face is returning to its previous shape.

Slips, rips, and KO clips

Neither Naruo nor Jintao were holding anything back here. Pure swanging-and-banging!

The most interesting detail about this d’arce finish to me was Tackett’s head position, which helped isolate the head and arm while he secured the grip.

Hammer fists as the coffin nail is such a distinctly MMA sequence.
