Transaction Roundup: Panthers waive OLB Amare Barno

WHAT'S THE STORY?

NFL: DEC 22 Cardinals at Panthers

Hello all! The Panthers made several moves this week, so I wanted to give you a comprehensive breakdown of the moves this fine Friday evening. Let’s dive right in.

Earlier this week, the Panthers released LB Josey Jewell, and placed TE Tommy Tremble and WR Dan Chisena on the PUP list. They also placed P Sam Martin and DL Bobby Brown III on the active/non-football injury list. They turned around and signed TE Tyler Mabry, a former Seahawks tight end they had worked out previously.

of days, they started signing some players and waiving others in the ever going roster churn of the preseason. On Wednesday, they signed CB Tre Swilling, a 2022 undrafted free agent who has mostly bounced around the league, and waived QB Ethan Garbers in the corresponding move. Then today, they waived OLB Amare Barno, and waived/injured CB MJ Devonshire. The added OLB JJ Weaver and CB Mello Dotson with the spots those freed up.

I am a little surprised they chose to move on from Amare Barno already, their former sixth round pick who seemed to have flashes at times to be a rotational pass rusher. However, he’s battled injuries the last couple of seasons, and with the Panthers currently likely having 4 edge spots locked in between rookie draft picks Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen, and free agent signings (from the last two years) Patrick Jones, and DJ Wonnum, it would make sense to take some looks at other young players to try and round out the rotation, especially if they felt Barno wasn’t going to contribute much. With two rookies expected to see heavy involvement early in this defense, those last 2 spots or so will likely get some snaps on Sundays between injuries and just general rotation.

What are your thoughts on these moves, Panthers fans?
