Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

After Thursday night’s dissection of the Summer Sixers, the Spurs made do with a workmanlike overpowering of Cooper Flagg and the Mavericks. The Spurs held a comfortable lead for most of the game, and snuffed out a late comeback attempt with clutch

baskets from David Jones-Garcia and Dylan Harper as time ran out on the Mavericks.

David Jones-Garcia had a short stretch in the first half where he fell to earth a bit and made some unforced mistakes that led to Maverick points, but he finished strong, and continues to compile a solid case for moving up from the G-League to one of the 30 teams in the NBA. It’s not exactly clear that that team will be the Spurs, but we should know shortly after the Las Vegas Summer League is over.

Dylan Harper had an impressive debut in the Silver and Black, scoring 16 in less that 20 minutes, and making an impossible-looking block on a Nembhard breakaway. The Spurs defense was impressive, holding the Mavs to 69 points, 31 of which were scored by Flagg. Carter Bryant had another poor offensive outing where he couldn’t find the basket, but made a series of wow plays on defense, and showed why the Spurs were willing to draft him with the 14th pick. Bryant might have tweaked his ankle in the Mavs game, so I wouldn’t be too surprised to see him sit out tonight’s game and come back on Thursday against the Hornets.

The Jazz played late last night, losing to the Warriors, 93-103, and haven’t looked particularly impressive in Summer League so far. They have some talent, so they are a team that could beat the Summer Spurs if they take the outcome for granted. The Jazz are led by Kyle Filipowski and Cody Williams in the front court, and have former Texas guard Max Abmas (you won’t believe how that’s pronounced) coming off the bench. It’s goin to be interesting to see the Spurs can keep rolling over opponents and possibly earn a spot in the Summer League Championship. To get there, they would probably need to win all four games and have a large point differential, since only the top four teams make it into the tournament.

Game Prediction:

There will be a brief delay during the game when Keldon Johnson throws his cowboy hat onto the court after disagreeing with a foul call.

GO SPURS GOOOO!!!
