Slammiversary preview: Styles returns, Hendry goes for redemption, women’s title vs. title, more!

WHAT'S THE STORY?

Excitement is buzzing around TNA Slammiversary. The lineup stands strong on its own, then TNA dropped the bombshell that AJ Styles will return.

As of now, Styles’ role for the PPV is a mystery.

The Slammiversary card for Sunday, July 20 includes:

  • TNA World Championship: Trick Williams (c) vs. Joe Hendry vs. Mike Santana
  • Title vs. Title: Knockouts Champion Masha Slamovich (c) vs. NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne (c)
  • TNA World Tag Team Championship: Nemeths (c) vs. Hardys vs. Rascalz vs. First Class in a ladder match
  • TNA X-Division Championship: Moose (c) vs. Leon Slater
  • Mustafa Ali vs. Cedric Alexander
  • Tessa Blanchard vs. Indi Hartwell
  • Matt Cardona & The System vs. Darkstate from NXT
  • Knockouts Tag Team Championship: The Elegance Brand (c) vs. The IInspiration (pre-show)
  • Steve Maclin, Jake Something, & Mance Warner vs. NZO, Zilla Fatu, & Josh Bishop (pre-show)

One of the appeals for this show is that none of the matches have an obvious outcome.

Just look at the main event for the TNA World Championship. I had thought Trick Williams would drop the title here, but the arrival

of AJ Styles throws a little uncertainty to that idea. If Trick retains by hook or by crook, Styles may be the man to save TNA for a future showdown. Even if Williams loses the title, the winner is up for debate between Joe Hendry and Mike Santana. Hendry is still red hot as the viral sensation, but Santana is nipping on his heels with organic fan support. It makes sense for Hendry to redeem himself after losing the TNA strap to Trick Willy, and it also makes sense for Santana to taste glory in his hometown of New York City.

Masha Slamovich battles Jacy Jayne in title versus title winner takes all for the Knockouts Championship and the NXT Women’s Championship. Slamovich took over the juggernaut role in TNA after dethroning Jordynne Grace. Jayne has the WWE machine behind her. As seen with Trick winning the TNA world title, there would be no hesitation to strap an outsider. Will it be time for WWE to return the favor and crown Slamovich as a double champion? On top of that, Fatal Influence will be milling around to assist Jayne if necessary.

Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy want to prove they are still one of the best tag teams in the business today. They will have the opportunity to regain the TNA World Tag Team Championship in their signature specialty, the ladder match! Nic Nemeth and Ryan Nemeth enter as champions, and beating the Hardys will be another feather to crow about being the best brother tag team in the world. The ladder match will also include First Class and the Rascalz. KC Navarro is medically cleared to compete after suffering a dislocated knee. Trey Miguel is injured with a hernia, however, he still plans to be at Slammiversary. If Trey can’t go, then Myron Reed will be the likely replacement.

Moose and Leon Slater duel once again for the X-Division Championship. Slater literally had the title within his grasp in Ultimate X, but Moose speared the gold away to retain on that evening. This match also has implications for the record books. Slater can become the youngest X-Division champion in history. If Moose keeps the prize, then he will close in on breaking the streak for longest X-Division title reign.

Mustafa Ali and Cedric Alexander compete in a WrestleMania rematch. Tasha Steelz orchestrated the arrival of Alexander to save her him the unhinged Ali, but it didn’t take long for her to betray Alexander. Steelz’s real plan was for Order 4 to get back on the same page to take over TNA. It starts by destroying Alexander for robbing Ali of his WrestleMania moment in their cruiserweight title rivalry from the 205 Live days.

Tessa Blanchard helped Indi Hartwell break into the scene in the United States. The Australian went on to work for WWE, while Blanchard toiled elsewhere. The story is that Blanchard is jealous and wants to prove that Hartwell will never be better than her.

Darkstate crashed Impact to beat up Matt Cardona. Their motive is unclear. The System went to NXT to fight Darkstate. The motive from the System is also unclear. On the go-home episode of Impact, Darkstate roughed up Cardona again. Brian Myers ran out to help his old pal. Even though Eddie Edwards and Johnny Dango Curtis don’t like Cardona, they joined the melee to back Myers.

Jessie McKay and Cassie Lee returned to TNA for the Knockouts Tag Team Championship. The IInspiration look to become two-time champs by taking the gold from the Elegance Brand.

NZO didn’t take kindly to TNA doing business in his territory, so the Certified G is bringing Fourth Rope friends Zilla Fatu and Josh Bishop for a fight. Jake Something, Mance Warner, and Steve Maclin like to fight, so game on for a six-man tag.

Slammiversary goes live on July 20 from UBS Arena on Long Island, NY. The PPV stars at 8 pm ET with the free pre-show kicking off at 7 pm ET. The broadcast will stream on TNA+ (annual subscription or single event), TrillerTV, and other outlets.
