Welcome to the Morning Commute
You might want to tune in today as we might see some history made. 5-star California guard Jason Crowe, Jr is announcing his commitment today at 4:30pm on CBS Sports HQ. If you’ve read the tea leaves, it would seem the expectation here is that Crowe will commit to Dennis Gates and the Tigers.
In the 247sports.com era, Missouri has received commitments from 3 players rated 0.9900 or higher in their composite rating: Tony Mitchell ‘10 (0.9902), Linas Kleiza ‘03 (0.9907), and Michael Porter, Jr ‘17 (0.9996).
Crowe is currently ranked 6th in the composite, and his rating is 0.9975, meaning that Crowe would be the second highest rated player to ever commit to Missouri. We have to get to 4:30 first, and as I will always attest: nothing is ever 100% in recruiting. There’s only 1 crystal ball on 247sports for Crowe to pick the Tigers, by writer Travis Branham. However On3’s Joe Tipton has placed a prediction for Mizzou to land Crowe also.
We’ll have coverage here and on the Forums. Matt Harris already has a trove of film ready to go.
Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+
- Mizzou MBB announced their captains for the upcoming season and it should come as no surprise with Anthony Robinson II and Mark Mitchell gaining the honors:
An All-SEC selection as a junior from both the coaches and the media, Mitchell led Mizzou with 13.9 points during the 2024-25 campaign. He also ranked second with 4.7 rebounds, third with 64 assists, fifth with 32 steals and first with 25 blocks. Overall, he was one of just 14 players in the nation to total 450 points, 150 boards, 60 assists, 30 steals and 25 blocks last season.
Ant and Mark are going to be big focal points this season. Hopefully they are able to step into those leadership roles with the Tigers losing so many experienced guys off last years roster.
- Eli Drinkwitz took the podium at SEC Media Days and Matthew Gustafson had the results, Drink had a lot to say as usual:
“With that, I know there’s a lot of burning questions in this room by the 14 of y’all that showed up (smiling). Just as a reminder, I’m not going to answer any questions about the Epstein files, the Radiation Belt, [or] whether or not it was possible for Lee Harvey Oswald to get three shots off in seven seconds,” he said, “I will answer questions about Mizzou football.”
I’m really curious how the Radiation belt snuck in between the biggest news story of the last few days and one of the biggest conspiracy theories of the last 50 years or so? But Drink did have a lot to say about his team and the state of College Football. It’s worth checking out Matt’s write up.
- Kyle Gibson announced his retirement wrapping up a stellar 13 year career:
The Greenfield, Indiana, native was a three-year starter in Columbia, reaching the NCAA Regionals all three seasons and finishing his Tigers career second in program history with 304 career punchouts. He elevated his play to another level in his draft year, recording a 3.21 ERA and 131 strikeouts, a single-season Mizzou record.
- On RockM+ True looked at how worried (or not) Mizzou fans should be about the current HS recruiting class ($):
Tigers fans will be relieved to see that Missouri places near the top across all ranking platforms when it comes to the transfer portal. It’s interesting to also note that Kentucky and Auburn — two other teams struggling on the high school cycle — also rank among the top in the transfer portal.
Drinkwitz addressed the topic of high school recruiting at Media Days, it’s... complicated but True does a good job of outlining the angles.
- Over at Rock M+, we’re still talking about Jason Crowe, and some other ‘26 and ‘27 recruits. But also of importance, DataMizzou dropped Question No. 1 on his 10 questions before the season:
If you found yourself watching the 2024-2025 Tiger team and wondering who was going to step up each night, you’re not alone! Now, that’s often an ominous thought. Mizzou’s season last year USUALLY found an answer to that question. However, it was often a moving target. There’s something to be said for finding success inside of that dynamic! More often though, that’s not the way you want to go through a season. Mizzou’s key returning pieces next year — we’ll call it the “core,” those players who contributed significantly a year ago and project to do so again — were not the only players who suffered from ups and downs. They’re the ones Dennis Gates is relying on for next year, which makes them the focus here.
Good content here for the forth coming season. Swing on by.
