On Dwyane Wade’s YouTube channel, he recently spoke about the pick of Ace Bailey for the Utah Jazz, and the comments were interesting. Here’s the clip.

Getting a young guy like Ace Bailey, the talent that he has, you cannot pass him up, y’all. Like, there’s no way. Even though the rumor mill was saying that he wanted to go to certain teams, there’s no way you can pass him up, right? He’s too talented. He’s one of those he’s one of those guys that just walk in the gym
ADand he can get you 30. He just he’s just one of those Melo-type of score-type of players, right? And so you had to get him. And so I thought Denny and you know, and the staff did an amazing job of grabbing a young fella. And then we all know what we heard from a media standpoint, but ultimately, the young man and his family made their way down to Utah and he seemed excited to be there. He got right to the court.
It’s a great quote and gives a window into the mindset of the Utah Jazz. It’s clear the Jazz saw all the media coverage and had their own interactions with Bailey’s camp, and still drafted him. You can’t take that for granted either. We’ll never know if the Hornets wanted Bailey, but it’s clear that the message from Bailey’s camp kept them from taking him. Utah, on the other hand, was willing to take the risk, and it looks like it’s paying off.
The jury is still out on whether Ace Bailey turns into a Melo-type talent. After a few games of summer league, it certainly looks promising. If everything works out, it is clear that a series of unfortunate events benefited the Utah Jazz.
