The Mets’ series in San Diego has been going pretty poorly, and the fact that Francisco Alvarez had to leave the series finale early this afternoon after taking a foul ball to the left side of his head is the icing on the cake.
Alvarez had that foul ball hit the side of his helmet, thankfully, in the bottom of the fifth inning. Although he was clearly in discomfort immediately, he was able to stay in the game to finish the inning, but he didn’t return to the field for the sixth inning.
Having spent
time in Syracuse earlier this month thanks to his struggles at the plate and defensively at the major league level over the previous several weeks, Alvarez made his return to the big league roster on July 21, and he’s hit .316/.458/.684 in 24 plate appearances from that through the team’s series opener in San Diego on Monday night.
