The future of Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has been a major talking point around the club in the last few weeks, but a major twist to the story could have big implications on the German’s situation.

According to a report from Jijantes, Ter Stegen is considering the option to undergo back surgery to address the lingering issues that caused him to miss the first few training sessions of Barça’s preseason.

time and Barça could use his absence as an opportunity to open up salary cap space: according to the report, the Blaugrana are considering not registering Ter Stegen’s contract, which would create enough space to register new goalkeeper Joan Garcia and make other moves in the market.

Ter Stegen missed a huge portion of last season due to a serious knee injury and could be set for yet another significant period away from the pitch, which might even impact his ability to play for Germany in next year’s World Cup.
