WHAT'S THE STORY?

The Buffalo Bills overhauled their defense this offseason, adding myriad players both to the defensive line and the defensive secondary. Even with many of last season’s main participants returning, the Bills still went out of their way to add players at both key positions.

Buffalo drafted three defensive backs in April after signing three defensive backs in free agency. While some of those players — veteran safety Darrick Forrest, for example, and rookie cornerback Dorian Strong — have specific positions

where they’ll line up, some of the team’s new additions may be cross-trained in multiple places in the defensive secondary. Veteran Cam Lewis is an example of one such player becoming a Jack-of-all-trades who parlayed that versatility into a long-term stay with the club.

In today’s edition of “90 players in 90 days,” we discuss a player listed as a defensive back who profiles mainly as a corner.

Name: Te’Cory Couch
Number: 33
Position: DB
Height/Weight: 5’10”, 175 pounds
Age: 25 (26 on 9/6/2025)
Experience/Draft: 1; signed with Buffalo following the 2024 NFL Draft
College: Miami (FL)
Acquired: UDFA signing

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Couch signed a reserve/futures deal in January at the conclusion of Buffalo’s season. That two-year deal is worth $1,853,500 overall. If Couch makes the 53-man roster, he carries a cap hit of $844,250 for the 2025 season. If he’s released, Buffalo will carry a dead-cap charge of $8,500.

2024 Recap: Couch had a strong preseason with Buffalo after signing as an undrafted free agent. He saw plenty of time, totaling 12 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, and one pass breakup during three exhibition contests.

At the end of August, he was released as a part of Buffalo’s roster cuts once the preseason ended. He signed to Buffalo’s practice squad, which is where he remained for the duration of the season. He did not appear in a regular-season contest.

Positional outlook: Couch is one of five players listed as a defensive back, with the others being Wander Owens, Jordan Hancock, Cam Lewis, and Daryl Porter. Couch is more corner than safety, so his other competition for a roster spot includes Tre’Davious White, Dane Jackson, Christian Benford, Taron Johnson, Maxwell Hairston, Dorian Strong, Daequan Hardy, and Ja’Marcus Ingram.

2025 Offseason: Couch is healthy and participating in offseason work to date.

2025 Season outlook: Couch is likely a camp body who has the added benefit of a season in the system. Barring a crazy number of injuries, I don’t see a way in which he makes the 53-man roster.

Buffalo added three defensive backs via the draft and two veterans via free agency, so there are more barriers in place to the roster than there are pathways onto it. Couch will likely have plenty of chances to shine once again during the preseason, but unless something crazy happens, he won’t make the 53-man roster.
