Having this week completed the signing of rising star striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £79M deal, the sensible assumption would probably be that Liverpool have now made their big move for a striker this summer.
Signing another versatile forward or a clear depth option might still be needed, but you don’t pay that much for a player like Ekitike to be an option. You pay it because you see him as the guy. That, at least, seems like the sensible assumption.
Alternately, you follow up
the £79M signing of Ekitike with a move for Newcastle superstar striker Alexander Isak, likely to cost at least £120M if available but whom Newcastle have insisted very much isn’t. Except, it turns out, he might be.
That’s because latest from Newcastle-connected Craig Hope of the Daily Mail has Isak having decided he wants out—and willing to actively push to get his move away. If true, Liverpool will be ready and one of few plausible options.
That news was quickly followed by The Liverpool Echo reiterating Liverpool’s now widely-briefed stance, namely that were Isak to become available the club would be willing and able to set a new British transfer to sign him this summer.
There is, of course, a long way to go from here to Isak signing for Arne Slot’s Premier League winning Reds. And questions of how Isak and Ekitike would both fit into the eleven remain. But things do very much appear to be happening.
