Despite the flurry of the trade deadline, the Mariners must grind on in Anaheim, always a tough place for them to play despite the Angels’ recent run of mediocrity. The Mariners missed out on a golden opportunity last night to gain ground in the AL West race with a blowout Astros loss; salting the wound, the Texas Rangers, who are up there with the Brewers as one of the hottest teams in baseball, won, closing the distance to just one game back in both the division and the Wild Card race.
Playing subpar
baseball against the subpar Angels just isn’t going to cut it for the Mariners, trade deadline or not. They need to come out of Anaheim with a series win, but more importantly, the offense needs to start showing more consistency—that is, not being entirely homer-dependent—before going to face an A’s team that’s on an offensive heater in their pint-sized park.
Lineups:
George Kirby makes another start against the Angels in Anaheim. The last one went pretty well, so here’s hoping he can replicate that again. Jorge Polanco gets the start at second over the lefty Cole Young. Josh Naylor is in the lineup, but drops to five against the lefty starter. Personally, I’d kind of be in favor of one last “sing for your life” start for Solano at first, but I see why the team wants to continue getting Naylor comfortable with his infielders before heading to Sacramento.

Oh look. It’s Tyler Anderson, again. This minimalist Angels lineup graphic pretty well encapsulates the excitement of seeing another Tyler Anderson start. It’s wild how the Angels did a draft where they literally only took pitchers, have drafted even more pitchers early since then, and still the back end of this series is the pair of Galapagos tortoises Tyler Anderson and Kyle Hendricks, the twin pillars at the temple of Moyer.
