Pumas got their first victory of the season after beating Queretaro by a 2-0 score. It wasn’t the greatest match but Pumas got a deserved win after being the superior team all thru the match. Both teams will now travel to the Leagues Cup tournament in the United States before coming to Mexico in two weeks where Queretaro will travel to face off against America while Pumas will host Necaxa.
The 1st half started with Pumas coming out with their three of their big signings from the start. Of course the biggest
deal of them all was the start of Keylor Navas as Pumas’ goalkeepers, a day after being officially announced by the team. A dangerous low cross from Alvaro Angulo was deflected into the arms of Queretaro’s goalkeeper, Jose Hernandez. Off a corner kick, the cross into the area from Rodrigo Lopez was headed from close range by Guillermo Martinez, past Hernandez and into the net to score and give Pumas the 1-0 lead. Queretaro said the ball hadn’t gotten past the lone but replays showed that although Hernandez had deflected the ball into the post and then gotten to the ball, he was clearly past the line when he did and the goal correctly stood. After getting into the area with the ball, Jorge Ruvalcaba lobbed the ball over Hernandez but it was cleared by Queretaro’s defense before any Pumas player could have a chance for an open net goal. A good counter for Pumas was wasted when Martinez failed to control the ball, wasting a good chance. A cross into the area from Angulo would get to Pedro Vite, whose right footed shot went wide. The game started to get very chippy, with a lot of fouls. Off a corner kick, Rodrigo Bogarin would get a header that was just out of reach of a second header from Kevin Escamilla. The halftime whistle blew and Pumas took their deserved 1-0 lead to the dressing room.
The 2nd half started with Queretaro subbing out Rodrigo Bogarin and Francisco Venegas for Jonathan Perlaza and Aldahir Perez. A shot from outside the area from Vite that went wide. The match continued with a lot of chippy fouls and now with a number of yellow cards. Queretaro subbed out Jesus Hernandez for Ronaldo Cisneros. Pumas subbed out Pedro Vite and Rodrigo Lopez for Piero Quispe and Santiago Trigos. A throw in into the area almost was won by Ruvalcaba but Hernandez took the ball off his feet. A Pumas counter would end with Ruvalcaba getting off a great right footed shot from outside the area but Hernandez made an incredible save to block it. Queretaro subbed out Jhojan Julio for Alan Medina. A kick by Escamilla on Adalberto Carrasquilla earned him a Yellow Card but it should have been a red in a terrible decision from the referee. A great counter attack ended with a great thru pass from Carrasquilla into the area where Jorge Ruvalcaba got off a left footed shot past Hernandez and into the net to score the goal that gave Pumas the 2-0 lead. Pumas started the play from one side of the field to the other with Navas starting it with a pass as Pumas made a great combination run. A terrible sliding tackle from Alvaro Angulo on Perez earned him a red card. While it was the correct decision, Pumas had earlier been denied a deserved red card from Queretaro’s Escamilla. Queretaro subbed out Jaime Gomez for Juan Robles. Pumas subbed out Guillermo Martinez for Angel Azuaje. A cross into the area was headed just wide by Cisneros. Pumas subbed out Adalberto Carrasquilla and Jorge Ruvalcaba for Santiago Lopez and Pablo Monroy. There were no threats from Queretaro in the final minutes and Pumas took a deserved three points in their first win of the Apetura 2025.
In a game where Pumas had a lot of excitement for the debut of their new goalkeeper Navas, Pumas got a victory in which he had little to do. The match wasn’t a great performance for either side but Pumas was the better team and controlled the game up until going down to 10 players but even when they were down a player, they were the better side. On the other hand, Queretaro gave a terrible match at home where they never threatened even with a man advantage and now sit alone at last place in Liga Mx. Pumas now travels to the United States where they will open their Leagues Cup by facing Orlando City while Queretaro will open their tournament against Minnesota United.
