The Dodgers are off on Thursday before starting their second and final three-city road trip of the season. Given the timing of this trip, when the Dodgers return home the roster will certainly have several fresh faces.
Back in May the Dodgers traveled to Atlanta, Miami, and Phoenix to play 10 games in 10 days, and won six of them. This road trip takes them to Boston, Cincinnati, and Tampa Bay but is nine games, with an off day nestled in between series against the Reds and Rays.
Conveniently the off
day is July 31, which is this year’s trade deadline, and the Dodgers are expected to be active on multiple fronts. They are firmly in the market for relief pitching, and that was before Tanner Scott injured his elbow. The position-player depth on the 40-man roster is quite thin and could use an upgrade as well, and that’s before factoring in the annual deadline tradition of acquiring Amed Rosario.
Last year at the trade deadline the Dodgers added five new players to the active roster, and in 2023 they added five players as well.
There’s also the expected returns of the Blakes off the injured list. Blake Treinen will be first, rejoining the bullpen likely this weekend after completing his rehab assignment with Oklahoma City. Blake Snell has been sharp on his rehab assignment with 17 strikeouts and one walk in nine innings. He’ll start next on Saturday in Triple-A, and if he at least gets into the fifth inning could be back in the Dodgers rotation in his next start, which given the timing could be against the Rays, one of his former teams.
In other words, when the Dodgers next play at Dodger Stadium, on August 4 against the Cardinals, they’ll likely have at least four or five additions to the active roster. They need it.
