The Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Gavin Hollowell from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Chris Flexen has been designated for assignment.
Hollowell, two saves, a 5.24 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 20 relief appearances with the I-Cubs this season and also has a 1.42 ERA in five games across two stints with the Cubs this season.
Flexen posted 3.09 ERA (15 ER/43.2 IP) and a 1.15 WHIP in 21 games, all but one in relief, with the Cubs this season. He did not allow an earned
run in his first 12 games to start the year, but recently had been getting hit hard — a 7.98 ERA over his last five appearances, including two runs in two innings Monday in Milwaukee.
This move leaves an open spot on the Cubs’ 40-man roster. So, feel free to speculate about possible additions to that 40-man roster, and to the active roster, by trade before Thursday’s deadline.
As always, we await developments. Today’s game preview will post at 4:30 p.m. CT.
