2025 Open Championship: OJ Farrell Slips Towards The End Of Round 1

WHAT'S THE STORY?

Former Marquette golfer OJ Farrell looked like he was going to have himself a day during the first round of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

Through 13 holes, the 2019 Big East Player of the Year was one-under-par thanks to two birdies and a bogey on the front nine. He came through with four straight pars to start the back nine, but then things went sideways on him. Farrell bogeyed four out of the final five holes of his round, ultimately landing at +3 after 18 holes.

The bad news is that means he’s tied for 97th place through one round. The good news is that Farrell is just one stroke off the pace to make the cut for the final two rounds of the British Open. The top 70 competitors and ties advance, and the current 27-way tie for 70th place is sure to break up a bit during Friday’s second round of action. If Farrell can recapture his energy from his first 13 holes on Thursday, making the cut at The Open Championship is absolutely within his reach.

AND NOW, A LIST OF NOTABLE GOLFERS WHO HAD A WORSE DAY THAN OJ FARRELL:

Padraig Harrington (+4)
Henrik Stenson (+4)
Brooks Koepka (+4)
Collin Morikawa (+4)
Stewart Cink (+4)
Louis Oosthuizen (+6)
Patrick Reed (+6)
Bryson DeChambeau (+7)

Farrell is set to tee off his second round at 5:15am Central time, which is 11:15am in Northern Ireland. You can watch the second broadcast on Peacock from 12:30am to 3am Central, and then watch the rest until 2:30pm CT on USA Network.
