Seth Rollins taunts fans, WWE media after World title win at SummerSlam

WHAT'S THE STORY?

In 2015, Seth Rollins pulled off the “Heist of the Century” by cashing in his Money in the Bank contract to win the WWE Championship. Saturday night in New Jersey, he pulled off what could be called the con job of the decade.

At SummerSlam, Rollins appeared on crutches, selling what many believed was a legitimate knee injury. After capitalizing on the moment, he entered the ring and cashed in his second Money in the Bank contract on CM Punk, who had just survived a grueling match against Gunther to

win the World title.

During the SummerSlam post-show, Rollins interrupted to gloat. He laughed and pointed at analysts Big E, Peter Rosenberg, and Joe Tessitore, saying, “I gotcha.” The new champion didn’t field questions, but instead played with Tessitore’s hair, posed, then walked off.

Rollins’ entourage — Paul Heyman, Bronson Reed, and Bron Breakker — stayed behind. Heyman tore up Rosenberg’s rundown sheet before the trio walked off, leaving the post-show crew with sour looks.

In mid-July, Rollins appeared to injure his knee in a match against LA Knight. In the days that followed, he was vague about his condition, raising questions about his status as Money in the Bank holder. On TV, Heyman said only that Rollins had until next June to cash in his briefcase.

Later in the post-show, Rosenberg, either genuinely or as part of the act, said he had dinner with Rollins the night before and never saw this coming.

Rollins’ treachery earned respect from WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque, despite him being less than forthcoming about his health.

Whatever consequences Levesque has in store likely won’t sit well with Rollins and his allies. But for now, the new World Champion walks away from the biggest event of the summer with the last laugh at the expense of his rival CM Punk.
