Josh Newton might not be an established player on the Cincinnati Bengals right now, but he could be getting there very soon.
The second-year CB gathered up the courage to reach out to superstar QB Joe Burrow and ask him to watch film with him. But he did it strategically.
In the clip below from The Growler Podcast, Newton said, “If you wanna be great, you gotta approach the greats.”
Newton thinks the way you start the conversation is important. “You can’t tiptoe,” he said. “That’s why they don’t respect
you.”
He then said you have to know what you want and be specific and direct. “You can’t say, ‘Hey Joe, can we watch film?,’” Newton said. “You have to say, ‘Hey Joe, can we watch film about this, about that?’”
Josh Newton was the one who asked Joe Burrow to watch film with him. Could he be a future captain of this defense?

At the end of the clip, Charlie Goldsmith added that Newton could even end up being a captain if he can improve in man coverage, as that’s “the final piece for him”.
It’d be great if Newton can take that next step this year, as he certainly has the right attitude for becoming a great defensive player in the NFL.
