
Looking for a sign of how good Penn State’s backfield could be in 2025? All three starters have been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, given annually to the best player in the nation, regardless of position.
Quarterback Drew Allar, along with running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, all appear on the the preseason watch list. Allar will be back for his third season as starting quarterback, and has completed 63 percent of his passes for 6,302 yards and 53 touchdowns, while adding 560
rushing yards and 11 scores during his time with the Nittany Lions. Singleton and Allen have been co-starters since their true freshman year in 2022, with each in position to become the program’s all-time leading rusher in 2025. Singleton has accumulated 2,912 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns on the ground over the past three years, while Allen is right behind him with 2,877 rushing yards and 24 scores.
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell who was a former standout at the Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.
Penn State has had seven players take home the Maxwell Award, including Larry Johnson (2002), Kerry Collins (1994), Chuck Fusina (1978), John Cappelletti (1973), Mike Reid (1969), Glenn Ressler (1964), and Richie Lucas (1959).
