Rafaela Borggrafe has today joined Liverpool on a free transfer from SC Freiburg. A product of the Freiburg Academy, Borggrafe made her senior debut back in 2021 and went on to make 37 total appearances for the club.
The 25-year-old won the Swiss league on loan with FC Aarau in 2020/21, making 17 total appearances, returning to Germany to take on a starting role. Her subsequent career saw the young keeper suffer a length illness spell, but returned to a central role for Freiburg last season as the team
finished fifth.
After stating her intention to seek challenges elsewhere at the expiry of her contract, Borggrafe spoke to Liverpoolfc.com about her choice to come to Liverpool:
“This means a lot. This is a big club with a big history and I want to be part of that – we never walk alone. I want to have fun playing football and [I] am so happy to now be a part of the Liverpool family.
“I spent 12 years with Freiburg but I think this is the best step for me, to come to Liverpool.
“I’m happy – and a little bit sad to leave friends – but I want to get better and I think this is the best place for me to be here to work hard, get better and make the next big steps for my career.”
