After a 11-2 season and beatdown of Colorado in the Alamo Bowl, BYU football checked in at #23 in the Preseason Coaches Poll released Monday. BYU is one of five Big 12 teams ranked along with Arizona State (11), Kansas State (20), Iowa State (21), and Texas Tech (24). Utah, Baylor, TCU, Colorado, and Kansas all received votes. The preseason AP Poll will be released next Monday August 11; the AP Poll is generally regarded in higher esteem than the Coaches Poll.
Jake Retzlaff’s departure likely dinged
BYU in the eyes of coaches, but not enough to keep BYU out of the rankings. Retzlaff withdrew from school and transferred to Tulane, and BYU as a 3-QB race between McCae Hillstead, Bear Bachmeier, and Treyson Bourquet.
The last time BYU was ranked in the preseason coaches poll was 2009 when they started the year #24. BYU was ranked #25 in the 2022 AP Preseason poll, but was unranked in the coaches.
BYU opens the season August 30 vs Portland State.
