Saturday notes...
- BACK-TO-BACK: The Cubs’ losses to the Royals on Wednesday and to the White Sox last night were the 10th time this season they have suffered back-to-back defeats. They lost three straight games only twice, May 6-9 (two at home to the Giants, then at Miami) and June 22-24 (at home to the Mariners, then two at St. Louis). Besides the pair to the Giants and Cardinals, the Cubs have lost back-to-back to the same team only three more times: against the Dodgers, to start the season in Tokyo; April 26-27 at home vs. the Phillies; and July 8-9 at Minnesota. - THE SHAW TRAIN KEEPS ROLLING: Matt Shaw has hit safely in all seven games since the All-Star break and in those games is batting .500/.500/1.000 (10-for-20) with a double, three home runs, six RBI and five runs scored.
- BULLPEN NOTE: Ryan Brasier, who threw a scoreless inning against the White Sox Friday, has a 14-game scoreless streak in which he’s thrown 14 innings, issued no walks and struck out 14.
- THIS DAY IN CUBS HISTORY: Billy Williams hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Cubs a 3-2 walkoff win over the Dodgers. It happened 56 years ago today, Saturday, July 26, 1969.
Here are today’s particulars.

Cade Horton seeems this/close to breaking out as a strong MLB starter. Two of his last three starts have been really good, the other, not so much.
He’s been much worse on the road (six games, five starts, 6.35 ERA, 1.694 WHIP in 28⅓ innings) than at Wrigley Field (six starts, 2.12
ERA, 1.088 WHIP in 34 innings). Fairly small sample sizes, to be sure, but... it would be nice to see him put together a strong start away from Wrigley.
The White Sox acquired Aaron Civale from the Brewers after he complained about being demoted to the bullpen following five mediocre-to-bad starts.
The change of scenery did not help. Civale has had mostly rough outings since the deal, though he did throw six innings and allowed one unearned run to the Pirates in his last start. Oh, and the Brewers got Andrew Vaughn in that trade and he’s been rejuvenated. So... this was not a good deal for the Sox. Here’s hoping the Cubs can keep that going tonight.
No current Cub has faced Civale for more than eight at-bats.
