Newcastle United have agreed to loan out Spanish winger Antonio Cordero to Belgian side K.V.C. Westerlo for the 2025–26 season. The 19-year-old underwent a medical on Tuesday before finalizing the move.
Cordero joined Newcastle earlier this summer on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Malaga CF of Spain’s second division.
The Spain Under-19 international signed a five-year deal with the Magpies, opting for the Premier League club despite interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona,
and FC Porto.
Newcastle had always intended to loan out Cordero to gain senior experience, so this move hardly comes as a surprise. Westerlo, who finished ninth in the Belgian Pro League last season, will offer the teenager top-flight minutes.
Cordero impressed last season in Spain’s second tier, starting 23 of Málaga’s 40 games while contributing six goals and seven assists. He was considered one of the top young attacking prospects in the league.
Cordoreo spent the early part of Newcastle’s preseason training at Darsley Park, where he was assessed by both senior and academy coaches before completing the loan move. Though Ajax and a possible return to Malaga were discussed as loan options, Westerlo emerged as the preferred destination if only because of the expected large playing time.
Cordero is the latest in a series of moves designed to balance first-team depth with long-term development, with a clear focus on the future instead of the present-day affairs of the Magpies, for better or worse.
