We’re only 46 days until the return of Penn State football so let’s look back at one of the most satisfying, knuckle-cracking victories in Penn State history: Michigan 2008.
Penn State entered the game on a nine-game losing streak against the Wolverines, losing in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007 in varying degrees of frustrating fashion. This game though was the chance the Nittany Lions had been hoping for, one where they could put a licking on Michigan. The Wolverines were
in the midst of a rebuild, with Rich Rodriguez in year one taking over for the retired Lloyd Carr.
Penn State on the other hand had one of its strongest teams of the decade. It was 7-0 heading into the game and ranked No. 3 in the country. The Nittany Lions had a strong defense like usual, led by the likes of Aaron Maybin, NaVorro Bowman, and Jared Odrick. But it was the Spread HD, high-scoring offense that gave Penn State that little bit of extra juice it didn’t have in previous seasons.
As much as fans hoped for a wire-to-wire blowout against Michigan that day, that didn’t happen. The Wolverines got off to a fast start, scoring on their opening drive and forcing a Daryll Clark fumble during the first quarter as well. They actually took a 17-14 lead into halftime, vying for the upset in Happy Valley.
From there though, it was all Penn State. The rout was on. The Nittany Lions outscored the Wolverines 32-0 in the second half en route to a dominant victory and finally getting the Michigan monkey off their backs.
Only 46 more days.
