We’re so back, baby! After a brutal two week stretch, three weeks if you count the series before the all-star break, the Detroit Tigers are out to prove they’re done with this losing stuff. The bats erupted for six doubles, one triple, and three home runs en-route to their first series win since their win over the Rays back on July 8th.
Casey Mize labored through the first inning, giving up a leadoff triple to Corbin Carrol, who then strolled home on a Ketel Marte single. Mize then walked two of the next
three batters and was over thirty pitches before getting a strikeout on the splitter and a quick flyout to get out of the mini jam. However, his command troubles resurfaced in the second inning, quickly working himself into another jam.
With one out and the bases loaded on a walk, single and a fielding error, his 59th pitch of the day was driven deep to right-center for a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 and AJ Hinch popped out of the dugout to take Mize out of the game. Brant Hurter came into the game and got the final out of the inning. This turned out to be the crucial decision of the game.
Meanwhile the Tigers got early extra base hits against Brandon Pfaadt, a Kerry Carpenter double in the first, and a Wenceel Perez double in the second, but could not get any hits otherwise. Gleyber Torres got a two out single in the third, but Carpenter popped out in the infield to end the inning.
Hurter cruised through the second inning on ten pitches and followed it up with a fifteen pitch fourth inning thanks to an incredible juggling catch by Matt Vierling.
The Tigers finally got the offense going in the bottom of the fourth inning. Riley Greene roped a leadoff double into the right field corner and Perez singled to put runners at the corners with one out. Perez then stole second base with two outs which ended up being big as Dillon Dingler lined a single into right which scored two runs, tying the game.
Hurter gave up a leadoff single to Ketel Marte in the fifth but got through the inning facing the minimum three batters as he picked off Marte who misjudged his timing and left himself an easy out at third.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers really got cooking. Torres got the rally started with a one out oppo taco to give the Tigers the go-ahead run. Gleyber was all smiles as he headed to the dugout, stopping to rub some good luck on Riley’s mustache. It clearly worked, because after a Carpenter single, Greene launched a no doubt two-run home run to left to extend the lead to 5-2. Later after a Spencer Torkelson single, Zach McKinstry blasted a two-run homer of his own to make it a 7-2 lead and the route was on.
That was the end of the night for Pfaadt but not the end for the Diamondbacks troubles. A hit by pitch and a single put two more on and Andy Ibanez singled to add on another run, making it 8-2. The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the sixth on a double, double, and triple from Carpenter, Greene, and Perez. Wenceel’s triple and his two stolen bases put him in some rare Tigers company.
Players in Tigers history to have a single, double, triple, and two stolen bases in the same game.

The Tigers would add on one more run in the 8th to make it 12-2, their highest run total since they scored 13 against the White Sox on June 2nd. Meanwhile the Tigers bullpen pitched superbly in this one. After Hurter handled three and a third innings, Chase Lee, Tyler Holton, and Luke Jackson pitched four shutout innings allowing just one hit and striking out five. With the series win secured, the Tigers will try to sweep their first series since sweeping Cleveland on July 6th as they send the newest Tiger, Chris Paddack to the mound tomorrow.
