Game Thread: White Sox (44-80) at Braves (56-68)

WHAT'S THE STORY?

Yoendrys Gómez will start tonight and hopes to duplicate his dynamite start of August 12.

The second half of the road trip begins tonight in Atlanta. The White Sox will face the Braves, who have had a weird and not-so-great season this year. Plagued with injuries and inconsistent pitching, Atlanta went from World Series contenders to second-from-last in their division in just less than two seasons.

Speaking of inconsistent pitching, the White Sox made a change ahead of the series.

Continuing that trend, we’ll see a new face on the mound tonight. Yoendrys Gómez was claimed off waivers on May 10, making the White Sox his third team this season, after stints with the Yankees and Dodgers. He made three appearances right away for the White Sox, pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. On May 20 Gómez was designated for assignment, and after clearing waivers was sent outright to the Charlotte Knights. On August 12, the White Sox added Gómez back to their active roster, and he had a dynamite start that very day (five innings, one hit, one run, one walk, seven Ks).

As for Atlanta, Spencer Strider (5-10) is on the mound. Strider has faced his own pitching issues lately after returning from a plethora of injuries dating back to 2024. While he’s claimed 100 strikeouts, his ERA is 4.69, and his WHIP is a brutal 1.36. Atlanta does however have several power hitters to watch out for.

First pitch is 6:15 p.m. CT. You can watch it over on CHSN, or listen on ESPN Chicago 1000.
