Soccer is back in Mexico!

Here’s everything that happened in week one of Liga MX Femenil.

Pachuca wins the Campeón de Campeonas

Week 1 in Liga MX Femenil not only brought all 18 teams back but also a new champion. The Clausura 2024 winners faced the Apertura 2024 winners in a single game to choose a new champion of champions.

The game, played for the very first time outside of Mexico, was held in San Antonio, Texas. Pachuca made a good gesture, putting into action a jersey signed by the entire team, and donating the money to help all those

affected by the floods.

After 90+ minutes of soccer, Pachuca bested Rayadas 1-0 and celebrated its second title this year. A lone goal scored by Illinois native Nina Nicosia in the 54’ was enough to best Rayadas de Monterrey.

Pachuca’s and the league’s top goalscorer, Charlyn Corral, was confident enough in what her team could do and she said before the game: “Pachuca has gone from strength to strength, and today I can say that we are a winning team. Today I can say that we are a team that isn’t afraid of anyone, that wants to compete against everyone, that can beat everyone.”

That confidence has no doubt paid off for Tuzas!

Eugénie Le Sommer’s debut

Undoubtedly, the biggest signing in this offseason was Toluca’s Eugénie Le Sommer. And that’s why maybe one of the biggest games in week 1 was Tigres vs Toluca.

Of course, the Amazonians had more chances and Spaniard Jenni Hermoso put one in the back of the net in the 18th. However, French striker Le Sommer was ready to make her debut and she did so in the 59th. In epic fashion, Le Sommer put her name on the scoresheet only 16 minutes later.

The game finished with both teams dividing the spoils and the French showing she doesn’t need many chances to make an impact.

What about the other teams?

Pachuca and Pumas got the two biggest results this week, with Tuzas beating Atlético de Puebla 5-1. However, maybe the most empathic result was Pumas beating Rayadas 4-0, a historic result for them.

This loss made many more fans doubt coach Amelia Valverde’s ability to coach one of the biggest teams in Mexico and no doubt, there’s going to be even more pressure on her this season to deliver results.

Besides that, Club América played Cruz Azul and Chivas de Guadalajara faced Atlético de San Luis and they both began their seasons with wins and so did Necaxa, which competed against Mazatlán, while all the other games finished in 1-1 draws.
