The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported Friday morning that Manchester United and Brentford Football Club agreed to a deal to transfer Bryan Mbeumo, pending medicals slated to take place over the weekend.

out £65 million across four installments and potentially an additional £6 million in bonuses. This amount is substantially higher than United’s initial bid of £45 million and add-ons.

However, with the addition of Mattheus Cunha at the tune of a £62.5 million release clause, and considering Mbeumo’s production during the 2024-25 season which included 20 goals and seven assists compared to Cunha’s 12 goals and seven assists, it’s no wonder the Bees expected additional compensation.

The club gets their next bit of business done before the preseason tour, but they paid a premium to do so. We’ll see if history repeats itself with United fixating on a player and then blinking first against the opposition club with more leverage. The initial fee for Mbeumo ranks in the top-10 of United’s most expensive transfers alongside Angel Di Maria and Rasmus Højlund on the list. Let us all pray this one works out wayyyyyyy better.

United will be expecting a boon in goalscoring after a putrid 2024-25 campaign. With Cunha and Mbeumo needing to shoulder more of the creative load that Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo carried alone last season, maybe United can begin sniffing the top half of the table next season.

There is certainly reason to be optimistic during this summer period when optimism is at its highest.

With United’s preseason tour beginning on Saturday, July 19th, Mbeumo may not even be able to make a Varane-style appearance, but we’ll likely catch a glimpse of what he brings in a red shirt when United begin their tour of the United States on Saturday, July 26 against West Ham United in New Jersey.
