Gilbert Burns is coming off four straight losses, which includes his first-round knockout defeat to 170-pound wunderkind Michael Morales atop the UFC Vegas 106 card back in May. That performance marked the second time Burns was knocked out within a span of 13 months, leaving “Durinho” under concussion protocol and unable to compete.
“I’m looking toward December,” Burns recently told MMA Junkie. “I had a little concussion, I’m still not able to come back, so I’ve still got to get a few more things
in the protocol to get able to get back to training. I’ve still got to take it easy a bit. It was a hard one, but I’m looking toward December.”
Burns (22-9) turned 39 just last week.
“I just saw Daniel Rodriguez just got a nice win against Kevin Holland,” Burns continued. “He’s ranked now. I think that should be a fun one. Me and Daniel Rodriguez in December, maybe January. Let’s see how the concussion protocol goes. That’s one I’m looking forward to. With the brain you can’t play at all. We’ve got to take it most serious.”
Rodriguez defeated Holland at UFC 314 last weekend in New Orleans.
Burns has been competing for UFC for more than a decade, making his Octagon debut against Andreas Stahl on FOX all the way back in summer 2014. “Durinho” holds notable victories over Jorge Masvidal and Stephen Thompson, among others.
