The Mets continue to shuffle their pitching staff, as they’ve re-signed RHP Chris Devenski and optioned RHP Huascar Brazobán ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Padres.
Devenski rejoins the Mets’ active roster for the fifth time this season. The 34-year-old impressed in his last stint with the team, allowing one earned run in 6.1 innings of work, but he was nevertheless DFA’d on July 22. Devenski was previously an elite reliever with the Astros, earning an All-Star selection back in 2017, but he has
struggled to find sustained success in the years since then.
Brazobán was one of the Mets’ best relievers in the early portion of the season and had a 1.62 ERA and 0.92 WHIP through June 17. Since then, he’s struggled mightily, posting a 10.66 ERA with 13 walks in 12.2 inings.
The roster move comes as the trade deadline looms two days away. David Stearns stated during a press conference last Monday that the organization’s top priority would be improving its relief pitching, which he backed up by trading for left-handed reliever Gregory Soto on Friday. The Mets have also been linked to a number of starting pitchers on the trade market, including Dylan Cease, Sandy Alcantara, Merrill Kelly, and Joe Ryan.
