Padres 5, Mets 0: Mets shut out, swept by Padres

WHAT'S THE STORY?

The wheel continue to fall off the Clay Holmes experiment, and the Mets’ lineup made Yu Darvish look like he came into the game with a 0.92 ERA on the season instead of the 9.18 ERA that he actually had when the day began.

Mets hitters only mustered up three hits as they were shut out for the first time since mid-June, and the team could find itself back in second place in the National League East if the Phillies were to beat the White Sox this evening in a game that started after a very lengthy rain

delay.

As for Holmes, he was inefficient and bad, as has been the case in most of his starts over the past several weeks. He threw 79 pitches, got through just three-and-two-thirds innings, surrendered eight hits, walked two, and hit two batters with pitches. Two of the four runs were unearned thanks to a Francisco Lindor error that put a man on first base with two outs in the bottom of the third, but Holmes was quite frankly lucky to escape the outing without having allowed a whole bunch more.

The Mets’ bullpen, which lost Jose Buttó during the game in a trade with the Giants that will add Tyler Rogers to the group for its series opener against the Giants on Friday, covered the rest of the game admirably. Reed Garrett, Ryne Stanek, and Brooks Raley combined to throw three-and-one-third innings without allowing any runs, and Rico Garcia gave up one run in one inning of work. Thankfully, the Mets have the day off tomorrow and should have a relatively fresh bullpen when they resume play on Friday night.

And to top things off, Francisco Alvarez had to leave the game early after taking a foul ball to the side of his head—on his helmet, at least—in the fifth inning.
